Packing tips for shipments up to 30 kg
Parcels up to 30 kg usually don’t need a pallet. In most cases a sturdy corrugated box with proper internal cushioning is enough. Follow these steps to help your parcel arrive intact and be accepted by the carrier.
1) Choose the right box
- Use a new or undamaged double-wall (BC) — ideally triple-wall — corrugated box.
- Size the box so items don’t rattle and the walls aren’t bulging. Leave space for protective layers.
- Max weight per box: 25–30 kg. If the contents exceed 30 kg, split into multiple boxes.
Fragile packing: internal protection, sealing, labelling
Internal protection & void fill (for fragile items)
- Wrap each fragile item in 2–3 layers of bubble wrap and tape it closed.
- Line base and walls with cushioning: foam sheets, EPE, packing paper, loose fill, kraft “shred,” etc.
- Eliminate all voids. Target 3–5 cm (1–2") of protection on every side.
- For glass/ceramics/electronics add cardboard dividers/pads between items.
If it won’t fit in a box
For odd-shaped or oversize pieces: wrap fully in multiple bubble-wrap layers, add a rigid cardboard shroud and corner protectors, then secure with stretch film and tape.
Final sealing (tape)
- Use H-taping: three strips across the top and bottom seams, plus along all edges.
- Choose 48–72 mm packaging tape. Do not use masking tape or string.
“Do not stack” protection (optional)
- Add a “Do Not Stack” cone/cap or a rigid cardboard top cap to prevent top-loading.
Labelling
Apply Fragile, This Way Up arrows, and Do Not Stack if needed. Keep labels visible.
What not to do
- No bags, fabric holdalls or suitcases as outer packaging.
- No old, soft, damp or patched-up cartons.
- No “bubble-wrap only” without a rigid outer box.
- No empty space inside — voids = movement = damage.
- No string/rope instead of proper tape.
Packing tips for shipments over 30 kg
Anything over 30 kg must travel on a pallet. Prepare the load so it’s unquestionably acceptable and protected in transit.
1) Pallet: type & footprint
- Use a sound, dry pallet with no cracks: EUR/EPAL 1200×800 mm or ISO 1200×1000 mm.
- Other sizes (e.g. 600×400, 600×800, 1200×800, 2400×800 mm) may be possible — ask us first.
- No overhang. If unavoidable, protect overhanging areas with rigid boards/corner guards and add extra marking.
- Check the permitted pallet height for your route (may be limited by line/terminal requirements).
Pallet packing: outer protection, stabilisation, securing
Outer protection (even on a pallet)
- Use a rigid outer shell: heavy-duty carton, corrugated shroud, or crate.
- Box-packing tips from the “up to 30 kg” section still apply.
- If boxing is impossible, reinforce edges/corners with strong board; add edge boards and spacer sheets.
Internal stabilisation
- Heavier pieces at the bottom, lighter on top. Keep the centre of gravity central and low.
- Use interlayer sheets (corrugated/foam), fill voids, and add dividers for fragile items.
Securing the load to the pallet
- Stretch-wrap: 3–5 full wraps with the film anchored to the pallet base, applied top-to-bottom in a spiral. Add a shrink/thermal hood if required.
- Strapping: At least two straps in a cross (PP/PET/steel) with corner protectors under the bands. Tension with a tool and seal (clip/buckle).
- Consider an anti-slip mat under the base and a rigid top cap to stiffen the stack and protect from dust/moisture.
Fragile & non-stackable pallets
- For glass/ceramics/electronics, add Fragile, This Way Up arrows and centre-of-gravity marking if relevant.
- To prevent top-loading, fit a “Do Not Stack” cone/cap and mark as Non-Stackable (may affect pricing).
What not to do
- No unprotected overhangs, pyramids, or off-centre loads.
- No single tight straps without edge boards.
- No damaged/wet pallets or “glued” repairs to broken boards.
- No “stretch-wrap only” for heavy loads — use strapping as well.
- No bags/suitcases/soft items as the outermost layer without a rigid cover.
