How to Pack a Piano (Upright & Digital)

Materials

  • moving blankets/foam sheets, bubble wrap, corner protectors
  • a five-layer corrugated shroud or a light wooden crate
  • pallet + anti-slip mat, rigid top sheet (cardboard/HDF)
  • ratchet straps (2–3) and soft strap protectors
  • stretch-wrap with overlap onto the pallet base
  • zip bags for hardware, labels: Fragile, This Way Up, Heavy, optional Do Not Stack
  • for digital pianos: a **triple-wall, ideally five-layer corrugated** carton sized for the keyboard unit
  1. Team & prep. Work with 2–3 people. Lock the key cover. Remove legs/castors if possible, plus music stand and decorative pieces. Place screws/bolts in labelled zip bags. Pack the bench separately.
  2. Soft wrap. Cover all faces with blankets or foam, then add 2–3 bubble-wrap layers. Fit corner protectors; pad any protrusions (pedals, hinges).
  3. Rigid shell. Add a five-layer corrugated shroud (or crate) around the wrapped instrument to stop flex and edge impacts—vital for long routes or multiple handlings.
  4. Pallet setup. Lay an anti-slip mat on the pallet. Stand the upright with its back to structural support. Keep the centre of gravity low and centred on the deck.
  5. Strap & wrap. Apply 2–3 ratchet straps in a cross pattern over soft protectors (no direct contact on lacquer). Stretch-wrap the unit with overlap onto the pallet base; add a rigid top sheet against dust/moisture.
  6. Labels. Mark Fragile, This Way Up, and Heavy on multiple sides. Use a Do Not Stack cone if top-loading must be avoided.
  7. Digital pianos. Detach the stand. Pack the keyboard like large electronics: a triple-wall, ideally five-layer carton with 3–5 cm cushioning on all sides, no movement inside.

Don’ts

  • moving the piano on small built-in castors down ramps
  • strapping directly onto lacquered surfaces
  • exposed corners or pedals
  • transport without a pallet on long routes
  • laying the instrument flat without a rigid shell

Tip: Measure doorways/elevators in advance and consider optional cargo insurance for high-value instruments.
