How to Pack Home Appliances (Fridge, Washer, Microwave & More)

Materials

  • OEM box if available, or a triple-wall, ideally five-layer corrugated carton sized to the unit
  • foam inserts/corner blocks, flat cardboard sheets
  • bubble wrap and soft foam for cushioning (3–5 cm on all sides)
  • stretch-wrap, ratchet straps, corner boards
  • zip bags for cables/hoses/screws; labels: Fragile, This Way Up, Keep Upright
  • pallet with anti-slip mat and rigid top sheet for heavy units
  1. Power down & drain. Unplug the appliance. For washers/dishwashers: drain hoses and let interiors dry. Remove all loose shelves, trays and accessories; wrap and set aside.
  2. Bag & label small parts. Place cables, hoses, screws, manuals in labelled zip bags. Fix the bags to the appliance or inside the carton in a cardboard pocket.
  3. Fridges/freezers. Defrost and fully dry. Close doors over soft pads and strap them shut. Box the unit with 3–5 cm cushioning on every side. Ship upright only. After delivery, wait 6–12 h before switching on.
  4. Washing machines. Install the transport bolts to lock the drum. Protect corners with foam blocks. A rigid carton is mandatory; reinforce with flat boards if needed.
  5. Cookers/ovens/microwaves. Protect glass doors and controls. Remove knobs/handles if possible. Nothing should rattle inside; pad cavities.
  6. Small appliances. Pack each item in its own cushioned box; no movement inside. Group similar items in a master carton with dividers.
  7. Palletise heavy units. Place centred with a low centre of gravity. Use corner boards and apply two cross straps. Stretch-wrap with overlap onto the pallet base; add a rigid top sheet for dust/moisture protection.
  8. Seal & label. Close cartons with H-taping (three strips across main seams top/bottom plus along edges). Mark Fragile, This Way Up and for fridges: Keep Upright.

Don’ts

  • turning a fridge on immediately after transport
  • shipping a washer without transport bolts
  • laying heavy appliances flat without OEM-style internal supports
  • taping directly on metal, glass or painted surfaces
  • leaving shelves or accessories loose inside

Tip: For high-value units, add shock indicators/tilt stickers and consider optional cargo insurance.
