How to Pack Furniture (From Dressers to Wardrobes)

Materials

  • moving blankets/foam sheets, bubble wrap for glass
  • edge/corner protectors, rigid cardboard sheets
  • a five-layer corrugated shroud (or panels) for outer rigidity
  • stretch-wrap, ratchet straps, soft strap protectors
  • labelled zip bags for hardware, markers, Fragile/This Way Up labels
  • pallet + rigid top sheet for heavy pieces
  1. Disassemble smartly. Remove legs, handles, glass shelves/doors. Secure drawers with tape over soft pads or remove them. Put all screws/bolts into labelled zip bags and attach to the main unit.
  2. Protect edges & corners. Fit corner guards on every external corner. Reinforce table tops, door edges and shelf ends with rigid cardboard strips.
  3. Create a soft layer. Wrap large faces with blankets or foam. For glass panels: paper wrap + bubble wrap, then sandwich between flat cardboard sheets.
  4. Add a rigid shell. Finish with a five-layer corrugated shroud (or multiple rigid panels) to prevent flex and punctures.
  5. Case goods (kept assembled). Apply straps around the body over soft protectors so doors cannot open. Ensure there’s nothing loose inside.
  6. Upholstery. Full stretch-wrap coverage, protect corners and base from tears and dirt. Use furniture covers for delicate fabrics.
  7. Palletise heavy items. Place the piece centred with a low centre of gravity. Strap two cross-bands over corner boards; stretch-wrap with overlap onto the pallet base; add a rigid top sheet.
  8. Seal & label. Where a carton is used, close with H-taping. Label Fragile/Glass and This Way Up. Use a Do Not Stack cone if deformation is a risk.

Don’ts

  • taping directly on lacquered wood or fabric
  • leaving glass in doors or shelves unsecured
  • bending chipboard/MDF panels or lifting by thin side panels
  • putting legs or hardware inside drawers without padding
  • shipping heavy pieces without pallet straps and a rigid top sheet

Tip: Photograph cable routes/hinge settings before disassembly; it speeds up reassembly at destination.
